National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) was initiated to establish a meaningful connection between the campus and the community. Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, emphasized that the progress of the country could only be achieved when the student youth were motivated to contribute to the upliftment of villages and communities. With this vision in mind, the NSS Cell at QIS College of Engineering and Technology was established in the academic year 2012-13, initially with hundreds of student volunteers. An additional two units was introduced in 2019-20 to expand the scope of its activities.

The NSS units engage in social service activities both within the campus and in nearby communities through the dedicated efforts of NSS volunteers. The primary aim of the scheme is to enhance students' personalities and provide them with meaningful experiences through community service. Students enrolled in NSS are required to contribute at least 120 hours of service each academic year, and upon completing 240 hours over a span of two years, along with participation in at least one special camp, they are eligible for a certificate of completion.

The NSS Unit at QIS College offers students a platform to participate in community work, fostering a sense of responsibility and involvement in the nation's development. Through their service, NSS volunteers strive to assist those in need and help improve their quality of life. The unit organizes a wide range of activities aimed at harnessing the energy and idealism of the younger generation, channeling it into productive and creative endeavors. These activities include awareness campaigns on important social issues like health, sanitation, and education.

In particular, the unit organizes regular health campus and cleanliness drives both on the college campus and in nearby adopted villages. These initiatives help raise awareness about various social issues and motivate people to work towards a cleaner and healthier environment. Given the pressing need for social transformation in rural and underserved areas, the NSS provides students with the invaluable opportunity to work directly with communities in backward villages and slum areas, making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Recognizing the importance of such initiatives, the management at QIS College has prioritized the NSS program as a vital component for the overall development of students. The scheme has proven to be instrumental in shaping the students' personalities, helping them grow into responsible, community-oriented individuals. Over the years, the NSS unit at QIS College has successfully organized numerous programs in the adopted villages, impacting the lives of many people and contributing to the collective betterment of society.

Objectives

  1. The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are :

    • Understand themselves in relation to their community
    • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
    • Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
    • Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
    • Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
    • Gain skills in mobilising community participation
    • Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
    • Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and practice national integration and social harmony
  2. The Motto
  3. The motto of the National Service Scheme is ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. Therefore, it should be the aim of the NSS to demonstrate this motto in its day-to-day programme.

  4. NSS Symbol
  5. The symbol of the National Service Scheme, is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun-chariot wheel primarily depicts movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and upliftment.
